Special Notice: End of an Era - December 2012

J.W. & E. Morris Ltd., parent company of Morris Line Engineering, with great sadness announces the death of its Chairman, Mr. D.J. Kearle, at the age of 85 and after 67 years distinguished service.

Mr. Kearle joined the company in 1945, aged 18, and quietly caught the eye of its founder, Mr. J.W. Morris. Working in association with the then Managing Director, Mr. J.R. "Jack" Morris, he oversaw the principle development of the company in the 1950's and 60's at the National Steel Company of Wales sites in Port Talbot and Llanwern and overseas projects in India and New Zealand. During the mid 1960's he established the Low Voltage Manufacturing Division, and in the early 1970's was appointed Managing Director. Morris Line Engineering was established as the company's High Voltage Manufacturing Division in the mid 1970's. Throughout the 1980's and 1990's Mr. Kearle oversaw the company's diversification by organic growth and acquisition, including the establishment of the Mechanical Division and the Total Electrical Distributors Wholesaling Division. The Morris McLellan Group was formed in 2004 with the acquisition of McLellan & Partners Consulting Engineer with whom he had a long and fruitful relationship. "DJK"'s last service to the company was to chair the Morris McLellan Annual General Meeting on 4th December 2012. He died peacefully at home on Sunday 16th December.

While his business achievements were considerable, of even greater importance was the respect and affection he was held in by all. His lasting legacy will be the highest standards of business ethics which he wove into the fabric of the company.

Factory in United Arab Emirates Operational - September 2012

After many months' hard work the new Morris Line Engineering manufacturing facility in the Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone (JAFZA) near Dubai has commenced production.

M.L.E. JAFZA will assemble high voltage disconnectors and switches to a range of electricity distribution, petrochemical and railway electrification companies across the Gulf Cooperation Council region.

Staff pictured outside our new premises (from left to right): P.C. Lingam (Supervisor), Steve Davies (Director of International Operations), Chandra Sekar, Gomathy Nayagam (Assembly Fitters), and Juan Xu (Office Manager).

Environmental Accreditation Award - June 2012

Morris Line Engineering is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the globally recognised environmental standard of ISO 14001: 2004.

Mark Askins, Works Manager, and the rest of the team at M.L.E. worked hard to create documentation and implement strict management procedures in order to comply with the standards required for this prestigious accreditation.

Company Director, Brian Jones, is delighted with this outcome and believes that it was essential that the Company embraced this challenge as an environmentally aware and responsible manufacturing organisation.

New 12/15kV Load Break Switch Type Tested in Prague - September 2011

In line with customers' requests, Morris Line Engineering have developed the new "RX2L" range of 12/15kV Load Break Switches, complete with silicone insulators. Although the design is based on our very popular “RX” range, which we have been manufacturing for almost 30 years and has been highly successful worldwide, we have now incorporated an arc chute, which is the latest type of load breaking device.

The new range is simple to install and maintain, saving valuable time and labour costs over the lifetime of the product. Also included, for independent operation, is a spring operated opening and closing mechanism which is available for equipment mounted in both horizontal or vertical configurations.

The full series of type tests to IEC62271-102 and IEC60265-1 have been successfully performed in the KEMA test laboratory in Prague during 2011:

  • Short time withstand current tests at 25kA/3sec.
  • Short circuit fault making tests at 7.5kA peak (dependent operation).
  • Short circuit fault making tests at 25kA peak (independent operation).
  • Load breaking tests at 12kV, 630A.
  • Load break tests at 15kV, 400A.
  • Dielectric tests.
  • Temperature rise tests.
  • Mechanical endurance tests (Class M1 - 2000 operations).

This is proving an exciting period for MLE with extreme interest in this latest cost effective design.

Overseas Co-Operation

As a forward thinking company, we are always alert to opportunities to co-operate with companies overseas to expand our customer base and so increase our share of the world-wide market.

To this end we have, for many years, operated through officially appointed agents in many territories, particularly in the Middle East.

A particular product in which we are acknowledged as world-leaders is isolators for use in railway electrification projects. To satisfy the growing demand for such equipment in one of the world's largest growing economies, we have an agreement with a Chinese manufacturer who produces, under licence, for the Chinese Market.

As future opportunities present themselves, further arrangements for local manufacture may be concluded.

Our main manufacturing base will remain in the United Kingdom, from where all design, manufacturing and commercial decisions will be made.
